Stop Taking Advantage of My Singleness

I am single with no children. My pastor seems to take advantage of this by asking me to do work all the time and making comments like "you have nothing to do anyway" to validate his requests. I love my job but even as a single person I still want to enjoy time to myself and being with friends and family. How do I tell my pastor this without coming across as irresponsible?

How would you answer this question?

I'm also a single church secretary, so I can easily put myself in this lady's shoes!

I'm blessed to work with men on staff here who don't think like that, and are very sensitive to my time off.

I would #1 recommend that she seek God to make sure she's viewing her job as a ministry, and not a 9-5 job. We're blessed to be able to serve God, and His people, in what we do Monday-Friday, and that blessing will, of necessity, mean that sometimes there are off-hours responsibilities. BUT, there are also times at work where we can visit with friends who come in, etc.

After that, I would find a non-stressful time to talk with the pastor, and explain her thinking, and how his statements come across to her. He probably sees it as a joke, but I can understand that it does not sound that way to her.

I, too, would definitely find a non-stress time to talk with your pastor and express your concerns about boundaries with him. Prayerfully consider what you will say. I had to have a similar conversation with the church staff that I work with, and they were receptive.

I stressed that, as with ANY job - the work is never done. And that I needed to have clear boundaries as to my hours. I also had to concede that, if what they were looking for was someone who had more time - I just might not be the one, and I understood and respected that as well.

I wish you well.
