Tamala - thanks for your insight and all your time & energy to put together so much information for us church secretaries. I appreciate learning from your experience. I've been a church secretary for 3 years and love it! But I had to learn as I went because the previous sec. had already left. I had worked in office administration for 20 years prior but I wish I had know about you when I first came! God bless!

Tamala,
What a helpful video. Your view that our position as secretary is a support ministry is so true. You have a lot of insight and just plain common sense that will help others.
I'm sending the link to your site to others that I know who are church secretaries.
Thank you for your encouragement. Ann

have a question: how do you put responsibility back on other departments that try to dump extra work on you, especially with no explanations! Having a hard time being gracious and saying "not my job!"- R. Wilsen

Kim, Angie and Ann:

Thank you so much for the kind words. I can only say that I really enjoy what I do. And I am happy and honored to help.

Ratha:

How do you stop other people from dumping on you? I think you have to be firm... you can still be gracious, but firm at the same time. Be the ENFORCER (smile). They may not like it, but if you are consistent and clear in what you expect and what you will and will not do, they can only respect it.

You might also have to employ the help of your boss (pastor) to make sure that the other department managers know that dumping their work is not acceptable.

But it is completely ok to say N-O!
