That is a difficult aspect of our job. We have to be able to multi-task. I try to put a post-it to mark where I was, or at least make a mental note of it, so that when I return to it I won't be completely lost. Sometimes I have to go back and start again. Having a pen and paper handy to jot a note to self really helps me to remember where I was in reading, etc. something.
I find it helpful to have a pad & pen handy to jot a note to self as to where I left off at the time of the interruption, or just stick a post-it to mark the spot. We have to be multitaskers. Sometimes when interrupted it is necessary to just start over from the beginning. If it is something I am working on the computer, I sometimes minimize that page, open the new page (the interruption) and then when I am finished, my task bar still shows the first one open, so I am reminded to go back to it.
Both of these are really good comments and great ideas. The key is having a system.
I struggle with this as well. As others said, making notes of where you left off is always helpful. Keeping checklists, sticky notes - whatever helps you remember what needs to be done will benefit you in the long run.
My most difficult struggle is the attention to smaller details when things get crazy around the office. Putting out bulletins with errors does not reflect well on the office. - But when things get chaotic around here, that is what sometimes happens. So the BIGGER picture of that situation is managing and assessing why they got so crazy in the first place and trying to resolve that core issue.
I hope that helps. Great question!!!
